Billboard: Most Popular Genre of the Last Decade

As we have not yet decided on the genre of music we want our music video to be, we decided to investigate the most popular and most sold songs of the last decade. We hope this information will help us decide what genre of music we wish to pursue, as the main aims in industry is popularity and selling the most amount of units.

To gather this information I used the website Billboard.com, and its most notable charts Billboard Hot 100. These charts include songs of all genres, and are based on digital sales, physical sales and radio airplay. I have collated the information of the top 20 songs of the last decade, from the Billboards 2000’s Decade-End Charts, to see what the most popular genres and artists were 2000-2009.

My graph shows that the R&B genre had the most bought and radio played songs, closely followed by Pop. This implies that these two genres of music were the most popular genres of the last decade, and so (if we were in industry) to increase the chance of producing a hit single we should choose a song from either the R&B or Pop genre.
We feel that from the evidence we have gained we shall produce a music video that’s either R&B or Pop, as these were the most popular with producers and consumers over the last decade.
