Kirsten's Evaluation

In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

For my media product we had to create a music video featuring our artist, a CD album booklet and an album magazine advert focusing a pond the indie- pop genre using marina and the diamonds as our inspiration.. I chose to work alongside three of my classmates Sam McMahon, Taylor Barnes and Sarah Smith. Together we all contributed into making this project effective by each sharing roles in the videoing of the footage and also producing photos for our ancillary task.
We used the programme Photoshop in order to create our CD album as well as using Final Cut Express to edit our music video. We also researched into our chosen themes etc by using programmes such as the internet and then producing our initial ideas onto the blog. I contributed by taking part within filming the footage for our video, being involved in the music video by participating as an extra and also editing various parts with the Final Cut. By using demographic profiling we targeted the audience to 16-25 years old both male and female. This is due to the fact that ‘Marina and the diamonds’ being an indie – pop artist give connotations of being young, energetic and care free. The artist herself appeals to a large audience particularly teenagers to young adults as it talks about her finding her way in life and becoming who she wants to be. The bands social economic group would be E meaning unskilled as it appeals to teenagers, as well as D relating to the working class.
For our music video we decided to follow the conventions of the genre indie – pop. The genre is most appealing to teenagers as it connects to them through the fun and energetic vibe their types of songs give off. The genre promotes the need of all teenagers to be young free and independent, being who they want to be.
When it comes to music videos, they are generally aimed at a teenage audience usually therefore telling a narrative to keep them interested within the song which will appeal to a wider audience. We decided to make our video similar by basing it upon a narrative focusing upon teenagers.
The two most influential videos we watched were Ellie Goulding 'Starry Eyed' and The Noisettes ‘Never forget you’ Both were all about having fun but we used them both for different alternate reasons. The Noisettes video gave us ideas on how to produce on own and what key features we’d need such as costume, props, attitude and setting etc. Whereas the Ellie Goulding video gave a feel of what we wanted ours to include a fun and energetic unique vibe.

Picture 1:  This is a still image of the main artist out of the The Noisettes. The way in which she has her hair done making it stand out and become individual as well as holding the guitar instruments, shows the connatations of indie - pop as their always focused upon their instruments and unique styles.
Picture 2:  This image shows us how the mise en scene is used to reflect uniqueness within the video. Here special effects have been chosen to create an atmosphere amongst the audience which is what we wanted in our video, something that was unique as well as using typical connatations of indie - pop.

Picture 3:  This is the image we chose to place on our album poster. This image shows the personality of the artist as more of a laid back fun image rather than a serious one. We can see this from the use of bright colours used for the costume as well as bright lighting and the expression she composes.

For our ancillary tasks we created we created a poster advertising our album and a digipack cover. We decided to focus our brand on being a more exciting, fun approach to music. Here are some examples of who inspired us.

As Lilly Allen is featured here leant up against the giant L shape, we as a group gathered inspiration off this which gave us the idea to have our artist doing something similar. Instead we chose to have her placed up against a giant green tape in order to be unique and create a product that would stand out from the typical.
This image shows our original design for our CD cover. Although as a group we liked the elements of this cover, we had to agree as a group that the colours and design just did not work. Therefore we decided to start again with our front cover, but still keep existing elements such as the green tape and font used. The new front cover turned out to be a success as it now fits with the brand image  and links well with our music video through colour and character.

This is our final version of our digipack in which we created. From the original ideas for our album cover we have now changed the colour scheme, by toning it down to something more neutral so that our images and font attract more. We decided to have the name of the album wrote across the artist's face in order for it to look unique and so that the audience are aware of what the album is called, as well as calling it 'self fulfilled prophecy' named after one of the songs to keep it simple. We also used special effects by the jumps and using various poses to give a more laid- back, enjoyable setting and giving a clear connatation of who our album's target audience is. As said above we have been inspired by Lilly Allen's album cover which is shown by the use of  having a similar image of the artist led up against the tape.

This is our final version of the CD poster we created. We decided to change various pictures such as the original image of the artist, as she was originally looking to the left hand side rather than the right, but we thought it would suit more to look the other way. We also added special effects to the poster by having the album hanging down from the animated  drapes to make it an indivdual poster and something unique. By just having the least amount of font possible we thought this would work better than giving the busy approach as people make mis - look and become uninterested, we also placed the apple logo in the corner to make it seem a more realistic product.

What have you learnt from your audience feedback?

When discussing our target audience we found our genre would to appeal to both male and female from the age 16+ meaning it appeals to the socio - economic groups D and E (young people and working class)
The target audience is a very important factor when designing our music products. I believe the one we decided to chose was perfect as it is a large niche consuming audience which is constantly growing and expanding. The indie genre is very popular amongst teenagers as they can relate to the connatations given, such as to be free and enjoy theirseleves etc. We maintained a brand image throughout in order to maintain out appeal to it's audience particularly. They are a good target audience financially as well, as indie groups are low budget, independent lables and will be able to gain maximum profit from their sales.
In order to gather audience feedback the whole class made questionnaires in which we watched each others final music video and answered the questions relating to it. The class then was videoed whilst they gave there indivdual answers back to the class in order for them to take criticisms as well as positive feedback. To our success our use of different locations and screen shots proved popular amongst the class, which we all agreed that the technique worked well within the video.
We edited our footage in order to attract our target audience and used the different locations/settings to relate to our audience and therefore create a relationship with their values and the video.

From our audience feedback we gained a lot of positive comments. I learnt to order to relate to the target audience you need to follow the conventions of that paricular genre, in this case indie - pop. By chosing a relatable scenario, such as here making
The use of technology.

Final Cut Express.
At the beginning of the year this software was new to us all so in order to learn how to use it properly we each did a small tutorial in which we picked up the skills. By using this software it has allowed me to learn new skills to produce various products and be successful in planning and completing a music video. When first starting to edit our video we found this very difficult and confusing but luckily one of our group members already had slight knowledge on what to do, and eventually we all picked it up and was able to participate. We first had to upload our music video onto the final cut express which wasn't an issue as everything was clearly labelled. We did however find various parts difficult, for example we wanted to use split screen in order to show our artist in different locations, this wasn't easy as non of us was clued up on what to do, but with help from the media tec we soon learnt how to produce this and it turned out to be a success.
Photoshop and Indesign.
To create our ancillary tasks we used Photoshop and Indesign of which most of us had used last last year to produce our magazines, so our skills were too an average standard but still needed improvements when using them.  We used these to edit our photos and add various effects on, by participating in this it refreshed my memory to become more involved and more skilled. By using these programmes again this year, it has allowed me to progress my knowledge and learn skills i didn't have beforehand when creating my album cover and poster.
Other Technology
When capturing our pictures and filming our footage we used equipment from college which was easy to get hold of. These pieces of equipment was quite simple to use as we had a slight tutorial teaching us what we needed to know about the camera and  the video camera. When creating our font for the two products we produced, we used a website called http://www.dafont.com/ where we found our suitable font. This website was very familar to me as i had used it previously to complete other prodjects.

In order to keep track of our indivdual progress we each uploaded posts onto our blogg, on http://www.blogger.com/, which made it an easier way in viewing our progress rather than constantly writing it down. I found blogger very easy and effective to use as I had lots of knowledge on the programe from the previous year. This allowed each indivdual to write their progress down in order to view it as a group.
When we had completed our music video our next task was to upload it to the website youtube. This was done so we could gain audience feedback from other memebers outside our media class in order to  get other peoples opinions on our video. It was easy to upload our music video as the instructions were easy to follow.
From using all of this technology I believe the skills we have learnt have made it easier to produce our music video and without this software and various tools, we wouldn't have been able to make a professional, successful product.
Conclusion
Overall i think our product was successful, we seemed to follow most things we had planned within our storyboard, various scenes were changed such as at the beginning we originally planned to have the artist walk up to the frames but this was impossible as we needed more time to film. So instead we chose to add fun sections of the artist messing around to create a more laid - back approach to the video. We used the split screen well in order to show our artist in different locations fitting in within the lyrics 'I just want to make a change' showing that artist is fed up and now wants to become successful. Our feedback from the audience gave us many positives on our video and how it was a success but also there was room for improvement such as possibly less locations and less costumes ideas as it could sometimes come across as too much, and drag their attention away from the video. By hearing this feedback it gave us as a group help on how we could have improved it and we appreciated the negatives and took them on board.
I personally enjoyed creating the video and being part of it as it allowed me to learn new skills and participant in something different that i haven't done before.
I believed a made a fair contribution to producing our final product as i attended most meetings but could of possibly made effort to attend more but was made difficult in certain cases. I also become involved in filming the video as well as being an extra needed in one of the scenes as well as editing various pictures and the video itself.

The change from our old Digipak Cover design to the new one

New Digipak Cover Design:

Old Digipak Cover Design:

Although we liked elements of our old digipak cover, the colours and design did not work. Therefore we decided to start again with our front cover, but keep elements of our old one, such as the green tape and font which we felt fit our brand image. We are very happy with the the new design for our front cover as we feel it fits our brand image and links well with our music video, through colour and character.

Analysis of Magazine Adverts

These two magazine adverts featuring two similar music genres, are showing the typical advertisments of two different artists in similar contents.
Firstly the advert which was placed in the popular magazine Q advertising Gwen Stefani's new album at that particular time focuses mainly on image and font to create this representation of good song writing, attracting the audiences eye, keeping them engaged by the contents we see feautured to the left hand side. The first aspect that reflects this is the main focus being the huge close up picture of the artist herself showing that this advertisment is all about her and when reading this magazine, being a commited fan of this artist or having interests within her, will automatically make you read in depth to find out what this advertisment is actually advertising making buyers available.
Colour is often used to also attract attention mainly having the golden and red contrasting to create a bright, appealing attraction towards its audience making the poster reflect more towards the female teenagers. It's almost like a pastel image has been created which is something individual for the artist, a more alternative representation as usually a basic image would be used as the artist and more focus would be brought upon the font and props to give the overall poster a much more larger appeal for its audience.
The font used is a much more unquie one to advertise who the artist is who is featured as well as the different bits of information gathered underneath to add to the already knowledge given. This font has obviously been used as a way of once again appealing to the correct audience and wanting them to gain attraction into the advertisment by seeing the font that makes it stand out. The artist's name itself is featured in bold writing which is showing to the audience that this poser is focused on her, this is who it's advertising and who's merchandise they are selling. Underneath the bold heading, the albums name has been placed to tell them what the album is callled as this is an important piece of information for any poster advertising music albums, and by separating the individual words this also draws attention towards it as it is now more easily viewed.
As well as this they have added a few well known titles of two songs off the music album, which fans of the artist will already be aware of making them once again interest in the advertisment, interested in buying her album, keeping the main important information in bold letting and changing the font and to a smaller size for the less important points.

The second magazine advert is advertising Ellie Goulding as an artist who is playing at music venues, rather than an artist who is advertising one of her albums like Gwen Stefani.
What's similar to the first advertisment is that a huge close up has also been placed featuring the main artist, showing once again that this music poster is advistising Ellie Goulding, she also seems to have been placed as a 3d image making her stand out more, creating a more realistic image for its audience, as well as having the basic standard background.
The colours that have been used within this poster are mainly darker colours,  focusing on blacks creating a representation of nightlife which is exactly when the artist would perform at such venues such as the underage festival shown in this particular photo, having the stage setting in the background reflecting that the person shown is an artist.
This music advert is kept very simple using simple fonts to create a bigger image/representation of the singer, making the poster mainly focus upon her and not different types of fonts surrounding the artist. The only colour used for the fonts is the white basically telling the audience key information about this particular picture, where the image was taken, who it was taken by and a website featured what you can visit in order to find out more information about this event that took place. Having the white font placed upon the black background gives a good image in itself, as it makes the font stand out above the rest attracting the appealing audience which in this particular case would be female teenagers to young adults.
This advert seems to mainly focus upon colour and the image of the artist itself to advertise Ellie Goulding the difference with the first one was that many bits of additional information in unique fonts and size was used to create a representation for Gwen Stefani advertising her as an artist, selling her new album to wanted fans and the public. The similarites that are known is one being the main focus of the singer, having a huge close up picture reflecting who the posters are advertising, as well as using colour in both images to engage the audience but having a more simple style for the second one.

Analysis of album covers

Featured here are two artists advertising one of their albums using different front covers to do this.
Firstly Katy Perrys album is presented in a more alternative representation and we can see this by the title having the complete opposite purpose to the image viewed. Katy on this particular front cover is pictured being a typical female by the clothes worn, having the small shorts and the cropped pink top on as well and pink wedged heels with added pink accessories. Having her also led upon a sunbed with once again the added colour of pink used for the towel featured suggests that she isn't matching to the title of the album describing her as one of the boys, as her representation is totally the opposite. This shows that the audience will probably not get what they expect from this album, it won't be a simple creation but to have a fun - filled unexpected purpose.
The blue font used for the album's title is presented in a typical colour, by using the colour blue the audience will automatically link this colour with the title due to the connations given off that blue is usually related to males. However they have chosen to have the artists main name in a bright pink colour to match with the other pieces of mise en sene used, to signalise that she a girly character as whilst using the bright colour to make the artist's name stand out above the rest and make it clear to the buyers that she is the important feature of the cover and the person who the album is produced for. As well as the different colour connations used different sizes in the font has also had the opposite effect, with the artist's name, making sure it stands out above the rest of the key information making sure that this is what attracts the audience firsthand, whilst the title of the album has been placed in much smaller font as to not confuse this with the Katy Perry logo, to know which is the important feature and which aren't as significant.
The album cover has the effect that the music produced within it will be fun, quirky, upbeat and most probably a good list of tunes to dance to. We as an audience can identify this by seeing that the lighting placed is constantly bright, with no dullness used in any form and this is shown by the types of features used such as the sky, the sun lounger in the backgarden with the added images surrounding it showing how much of an upbeat album this is going to be for its audience.
The second album advertising Paolo Nutini - Sunny side up is represented in a more typical style, as the image shown is bascially matching the title that has been created.
By focusing on this album the suggestions are that it is basically advertised by the colour scheme and the focus of engaging their audience, attracting their attention by the bright effects used. The colours green, red and yellow used within the background are typical representations of the title reading Sunny, the brightness used within the colour scheme shows the sunny connations for the audience suggesting just like the previous Katy Perry album that this one is also fun with an upbeat list of songs produced on the album. The font has also been placed with the main title being in a yellow colour once again showing the typical connations of relating this particular colour with the word sunny, but having the main artists name in a bold white colour to make it stand out having a bigger effect on the audience, showing just like Katy Perry's album that Paolo Nutini is the main character.
Images used on this album have a more unique style. By having the paintings hung up on the wall expressing the albums name is an effect to which it matches the theme of the cover, having the rainbows and images of the sun and various flowers expresses the albums name in depth adding more expression to what the album has to offer.
It shows the male used within the cover, eating the eggs once again showing connations of the albums name, but expressing this in a different form to the sun used within the pictures of the rainbow etc hung up, this is more of a connation of eggs which could suggest that the audience won't get what expected from this album just like Katy Perry's album.
The similarites between these two vary, having the main focus on font brought upon the main artist tells the audience exactly who the advertising is for, what the audience should expect, as well having the theme of colour to gain attraction for its target audience using bright colours contrasting together. Differences used are that Katy Perry's album has a more alternative representation to what the album is called, expressing a more feminie role to what the title suggests that shes more of a boisterous character. Paolo Nutini's cover is a much more typical representation of fun laughter and quirky music using the images and colour to produce this.

Results from questionnaire.

From the results taken from the questionnaire, we can see that most people enjoy Marina and the Diamonds as an artist due to her uniqueness and quirky sense of personality. They express her as being an individual and different from the original stereotypical indie - pop artist, describing her music as upbeat and involving countless catchy tunes. However there was criticisms involved within this questionnaire from certain people quoting that they find her recent songs strange with no involving expression or creavity to her lyrics, and well as expressing that her style isn't suited to what they'd prefer. Also some participants didn't give an answer simply because they had no interest in her to listen to the music she produces.

The questions we created were also to see the interest gained from the participants about indie - pop, whether they like the genre and what they'd like to see from these type of music videos. They described that what they look for the most is a good narrative, a story line to keep the watcher engaged wanting to stay listening to the song rather than switching it over after so many seconds. They also commented that experimental videos and uniqueness to music videos is what they mainly enjoy not the usual expectations, something indivdual and different to keep them interested throughout. The male participants seem to want female dancers in their choice of music video mainly because it attracts them towards it and they can relate back to the song from the music video featuring them.

We also asked what they would associate with an indie - pop music video and their feedback was, bright colourful images, the band being shown simplicity, experimenting with different contents making the video unique and quirky also having the alternate representations as well as artists such as; The Script, Ellie Goulding and The Kooks associated with this genre.

We also lastly wanted to find out who their favourite artist was to give us an inside to what type of genre they listened to the most and whether an indie - pop music video would work for them. The results had a selection of Ellie Goulding, The Kooks, Libertines, Paramore, Lady Gaga. We had a good selection of indie - pop artists which has gave us a positive feedback for our video.

Analysis of Indie-Pop Videos, Ellie Goulding - Starry Eyed.

I am going to analyse and explain in depth the contents of this video, the ideologies and representations given off as well as the special effects, lightening, mise en scene, cinematography and sound effects.

To draw attention to the audience a good start to a music video is an necessity, here in Ellie Gouldings - Starry Eyed close up shots of the singer are used for the audience to know who the artist is, whose representing the video. We have her contrasted into two to form a sort of symmetrical appearance of her creating an effect by also using shadows and dark lighting for special effects. White 'cartoon' stars are also used to create the effect of referring back to the title of the song being 'starry eyed' having the typical mise en scene to represent this, making it even more effective to the audience by placing them onto a black background for them then to disappear with the camera left to use mid angle shots to focus in on the main artist, as well them making an appearance a few points throughout this video, using special effects to give the image that the stars are coming out of the artists hands reflecting once again the title of the song.

This video includes lot of different techniques used for the special effects, as already mentioned we have the symertical view of her as well as the different darkness contrasted between the light to reflect the artist, and the typical white stars placed on the dark background to refer to the song. Also throughout the video, the artist is constantly being swapped to different angels changing positons and using a tracking technique to capture the moves and lyrics from her. We also have the bright lighting which is constantly used throughout this video showing the typical representations of 'stars' that they are bright, shiny and never dull, but as well as this contrasting it with dark colours to represent the night time setting where stars would usually appear.

Different locations are used throughout this video to make the production more interesting, keeping the audience attracted towards it the whole time, keeping their interests within the song. In this particular music video only two locations are used which aren't typical of the song, they seem to be placed within a historical house environment which personally i think is used to create a more unusual atmosphere, keeping the audience intrigued and using something different and unique rather than the stereo typical environments that would be used. The camera tends to use dissolve edits as well as straight cut edits to quickly transfer to a new location but always referring back to the original one, once again keeping the audience captured. We also have the dancers that are generally appearing in the video mostly throughout, having the special edits used on them to show how they transfer around the place featured, how they are dancing and creating a typical imagine of magical, exciting times, we get this connation as an audience through the title of the song being involved with stars, creating a more fantasy atmosphere.

The costumes that are used are generally the artist featured in small dresses and having the look of being bright, possibly reflecting the image of a star, as well sometimes wearing more darker coloured clothes such as blacks to create the night time image, making the representations of the song. The dancers often seen wearing light blue outfits, unusual outfits that stand out, making an appearance to the audience keeping them interested within the video as well as once again reflecting the night time.

To show that Ellie Goulding is the main artist featured in this video, close up shots are always used on her to create the image of her being the most important the whole video being about this one artist, and using long shots on the other dancers which are featured to represent that they aren't as important but still a feature involved within the video.

The song doesn't involve much creativity within its lyrics, but my thoughts are that this has been done on purpose so that the audience can appreciate this song basically for its catchy tune, and unique qualities.

In conclusion we can see that this particular music video focuses mainly upon editing making items seem unique and attracting the audience's attention keeping them engaged. We can see that various close up shots are used, focusing in on Ellie Goulding to show that she's the main artist (most important character). As well as this costumes featured show the contrasts between the light and dark.

Music video representations and ideologies - Justin Bieber 'One Time'

In this text I'm going to distinguish the representations and ideologies that each indivdual character, from the music video 'one time' by Justin Beiber.

The social groups and places that are represented in this unique music video are mainly that the video features young, trendy teenagers, making children/teenagers their aim, the music that them alone choose to listen to specifically by the clothes that the characters are wearing and the ideologies that they are giving off by the lyrics sung etc. The setting within this video has been placed at a large open house, particulary a celebrity type desination due to the size of the features shown, such as; the large swimming pool featured outside of the house and the quantity of the residence.

As started before, this video is particulary aimed at the middle class, mainly female teenagers. We can this by the friends of the singer featured in the video, wearing clothes types such as hoodies, jeans, long chains, caps etc. This stereotype is dominant as the public in the media expect most teenage boys to dress like this. Also featured is the games console (Xbox) well known and equipped to keep teenagers especially entertained, making this section of the video appeal more to the male gender, by this being the hobby that most young boys enjoy. As well as this, throughout the video there is a clear signal of young romance with the main character constantly singing about love in his lyrics and expressing it through the acting scene in the video by being surrounded by attractive female characters and flirting with them, making the teenagers once again appeal to this as they could have experienced something similar being the same age range and seeing Justin as a role model onto how to handle these situations and girls relating to this and they could have experienced something similar.

The mise en scene is constantly show in various ways, one way being the lighting. The effects used are having the dark lights constantly featured throughout the party scene to show a dominant stereotype of darkness singnalling fun, but also possibly giving the connatations of badness as love doesn't always work out for the character. In some sections of the video as the camera forces in on the star with close up shots, a small spotlight is placed on the character giving the stereotype of him being important and the audience should focus on only him, a typical ideology about a celebrity.

The shots that are used, are generally close ups of the main singer, creating this image that the whole music video is about him and that he is the most important, making us aware of who the whole production is about. This is the dominant stereotype once again as usually we would expect to see the main singers in music videos the important character. Quick shots are also used for editing to distinguish the party scenes, giving the connatations of happy, exciting all joyful types and we can see this from the shots and the dark lighting used, also the costumes featured being dresses, skirts, jeans etc making the music video conform to the ideologies, having the original representations making the video dominant.

Although this music video uses mainly dominant representations and ideologies, the alternatives are also placed within it. Boys are seen participating in the dancing, which is a lot more traditional than it used to be as before the norm would be for girls to dance. This is reflecting teenage image if what teenage girls will like about the male species, the innocent look. Another alternative representation is that the song being about love and romance, this would normally be sung by a female, as they are oringally seen as the more 'soppy' romantic species but here in this particular video the main singer is a male, which would attract the female gender to like it making them understand his feelings.

In conclusion to this, we can see as an audience the dominant representations used, being the Xbox, trendy clothes and the big houses used within the music video to create the impression that this character has lots of money which would be the norm for any celebrity as well as having the spotlights focusing on him throughout, making the video based around him that he is the most important which once again the audience will expect. However alternate representations are also used, the main singer being a male singing about love and romance which would be normally sung by a female, also having the males dancing in certain scenes which normally it would be the female species.

Introduction

Our Group:               Kirsten                  Taylor                 Sarah                  Sam

Last year at AS Level Sarah, Taylor and Kirsten produced Print Projects (Music Magazines), and Sam produced the Film Project. Therefore we all have different skills to offer to our project. As three of us focused on the Music Magazine project we can offer skills on the advertising and print section, where as Sam can offer skills in the video section of the project. Combining our skills and ideas together we have decided to create a Music Video, Album Cover and a Poster Advertisement.
